Gardening is potentially a “long-term” memory for VITALIA® residents with dementia. For many, gardening was a part of their lives. Often they remember their parents working in the gardens while they were growing up. Gardening is a very positive hobby that assists with hand/eye coordination, feeling textures, matching like items, and it gives residents a sense of purpose.
It is incredibly beneficial for residents with dementia to be connected to long-term memories. These memories bring back that sense of purpose and usually from a time of happiness. Knowing about these long-term memories can give staff and families a topic they can use in conversation to connect with residents, helping bring them back to that time, giving the resident comfort and happiness. This can also play a huge role in redirecting and helping decrease dementia related behaviors.
Here at VITALIA Active Adult Community® – Montrose Copley, OH to celebrate and participate in National Gardening Month we are really going to be focusing on our courtyard in the Neighborhood. We have a raised flower bed that we will be cleaning out for planting tomatoes and herbs. We will be painting flower pots and planting each resident’s favorite flowers. Part of our morning routine will be to water and tend to our garden. We even have our own fairy and gnome garden that we will be sprucing up and adding more to this spring. We plan on spending a lot of afternoons in our courtyard soaking up the sun and enjoying watching our garden grow.
