First Impressions: Creating a Welcoming Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Jesse Hollis, Plant Operations Director

First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.

As Plant Operations Director at Vitalia Montrose, I believe first impressions are about creating a community that looks and feels welcoming at all times. We should care for our buildings the same way we would care for our own homes.

That means maintaining an environment where we would feel comfortable living or welcoming our own loved ones. Every detail, from clean carpets to healthy landscaping, helps reflect that pride.

Keeping Our Community Looking Its Best

For me, being tour-ready means making sure our community looks as clean and inviting as the day it opened. It takes teamwork between Plant Operations, Housekeeping, Sales, and community leadership to maintain that standard.

Our Housekeeping and Plant Operations teams work to highlight the best of our building and grounds. When everything looks clean and well-maintained, our Sales team can focus on welcoming visitors and helping them experience the community.

I work closely with Housekeeping, Sales, and our Executive Director to identify concerns in high-traffic areas. Together, we make sure these spaces receive consistent attention.

Daily walkthroughs also play an important role. I walk through the entire building and property each day, looking for maintenance concerns that need attention.

These checks help me identify scuffed walls, chipped paint, damaged trim, and other appearance issues before they become more noticeable.

My Plant Operations Assistant and I also complete daily trash walks throughout the landscaped areas. Keeping the grounds free of litter helps maintain a clean, welcoming exterior.

Landscaping requires consistent communication with our provider. I work closely with the landscaping team to address routine mowing, trimming, and other maintenance concerns.

When I notice dead plants or flowers, I bring those concerns forward promptly. I approach these decisions with the same standards I would apply to my own home.

Lighting is another important part of first impressions. Dark spots in hallways can make otherwise welcoming spaces feel less inviting.

During daily walkthroughs, I check for burnt-out bulbs and replace them as soon as possible. I also keep extra bulbs in the workshop so we can make quick corrections without unnecessary delays.

These routines help us maintain a bright, clean, and welcoming environment throughout Vitalia Montrose.

Maintaining High Standards Through Carpet Care

One First Impressions success we take particular pride in at Vitalia Montrose is the condition of our carpets.

Our team has made carpet cleanliness an ongoing priority. Maintaining these surfaces helps keep our building looking fresh and well cared for.

That effort has not gone unnoticed. Visitors touring the community and team members from Arrow Home Office have complimented the appearance of our carpets.

Keeping them in good condition requires consistent teamwork. When someone notices a new stain, we communicate with one another and work to address it promptly.

Rather than waiting for stains to accumulate, we focus on cleaning them as soon as possible. This helps maintain the appearance of our common areas and prevents smaller concerns from becoming more noticeable.

This approach is something other Plant Operations Directors can easily implement. Encouraging team members across departments to report carpet stains creates more opportunities to address them early.

It also reinforces that maintaining a welcoming community is a shared responsibility. Housekeeping, Plant Operations, and other departments all contribute to the experience residents and visitors have.

For me, first impressions reflect the pride we take in our work and the care we put into our surroundings. A clean carpet, working light, or freshly maintained landscape may seem like a small detail, but together they make a lasting difference.

By working as a team and maintaining high standards, we help ensure Vitalia Montrose remains a welcoming community residents are proud to call home.
