As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.
After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Plant Operations Director at Vitalia Montrose, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.
For the spring refresh, my team begins by evaluating areas that most directly impact safety and usability. Once we address those priorities, we shift our focus to first impressions and high-traffic areas.
We also document lower-priority concerns that we can resolve later in the season.
Recently, my team completed a cleanup and refresh of the Memory Care courtyard. We also installed three raised garden beds in Independent Living and one raised garden bed in Assisted Living.
The Plant Operations Assistant and I also partnered on a deep spring cleaning of the property’s exterior. This work helped improve the overall appearance of the community and prepare it for warmer months.
To maintain organization and accountability, I document completed work and ongoing projects in TELS. I also work closely with the Executive Director and Sales team. Together, we help ensure the building and grounds meet first-impression standards for residents, families, and prospective residents.

One common spring startup challenge involves winter damage related to salt use. Detailed property walk-throughs and strong communication with landscaping partners help us identify and resolve these issues quickly.
Typical concerns include dead plants, patchy grass, and damaged grass from salt runoff near sidewalks and driveways. We also focus on general debris cleanup after the winter season.
Looking ahead, one of our biggest process improvements will be strengthening our fall preparation efforts. We plan to take a more proactive approach to seasonal cleanup, pruning, and plant protection before winter arrives.
We will also document recurring problem areas, such as poor drainage, weak turf, and persistent weed growth. This will help us prepare more effectively for next year’s spring refresh.
It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure Vitalia Montrose continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
