Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Vitalia Montrose, I came to senior living through a recommendation from a friend. Once I began working in this field, I found a better quality of life and long-term stability. That balance made the work even more rewarding.
Culinary in senior living offers the chance to serve residents in a meaningful way. It is not only about preparing meals. It is about creating moments of comfort, celebration, and connection.
Residents have taught me to slow down and enjoy life. Their perspective is a reminder that each day matters. A shared meal or simple conversation can become something meaningful.
One favorite memory from this year was celebrating two residents who turned 100. It was special to honor them with their families and the community. Moments like that show how dining and celebration can bring people together.
Success in this work takes motivation and a sense of urgency. The work moves quickly, and residents depend on the team each day. Staying focused helps create a strong dining experience.
Empathy and compassion are just as important. Residents may have different needs, preferences, and routines. A thoughtful culinary team listens, responds, and serves with care.
One moment that shows the impact of this work comes through resident and family feedback. When someone shares that they truly enjoyed a brunch or Candlelight Dinner, it means a great deal. That response shows the team’s effort made a difference.
Those comments remind us why what we do matters. A special meal can create joy, bring families together, and help residents feel celebrated. In this work, hospitality becomes part of how a community feels like home.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
