Thrive with Proactive Aging

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Heather Kiba, Director of Wellness

Across the world, people are living longer than ever before. However, according to the World Health Organization, “evidence suggests the proportion of life in good health has remained broadly constant, implying that the additional years are in poor health.” Taking a proactive approach to aging can help us live full, energetic, and healthy lives no matter how many years we have lived.

As the Director of Wellness at Vitalia Montrose. I advocate for proactive aging through maintaining a healthy diet and staying physically active. Other examples include scheduling regular health screenings with doctors, dentists, and eye specialists.

Engaging in meditation and increasing exercise frequency are effective methods for reducing stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety, if left unchecked, can have detrimental effects on health as one ages, potentially leading to conditions:

  • high blood pressure
  • heart problems
  • depression

Factors such as lack of transportation to appointments and insufficient education about preventive care can hinder individuals from maintaining proactive health habits. The benefits of preventive care include slowing down the aging process and boosting energy levels.

To encourage proactive thinking, we provide education, workshops, and guest speakers for residents and their families. Demonstrating the benefits of proactive behavior and making preventive care enjoyable are key strategies for promoting a proactive approach to aging.

It is never too late to invest in your health. Taking control of our well-being can be the difference between surviving and thriving, the difference between extra years of truly living and extra years in decline. Make your years count. Approach aging proactively and use those extra years to get another degree, take up a new hobby, break a record, or explore opportunities you never thought you would get to experience.
