Vitalia Active Adult Community – Montrose Concentrates on Alzheimer’s Awareness

Category: Memory Care

Author: Sydney Krieger, Memory Care Director

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month, bringing the plight of those facing the diagnosis, and the need for a cure, to the forefront. Today, there are more than 6.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease, and while research continues, a cure is yet to be identified. Arrow Senior Living is working to heighten awareness of Alzheimer’s disease during the month of November through discussion and education.

Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Currently more than six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. It is a progressive disease that affects one’s memory, behavior, language, and participation in activities of daily living.

Currently there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. There are however medications that can help with the disease progression, as well as help with symptoms caused by Alzheimer’s.

The best way for us to engage and help residents with Alzheimer’s Disease is completing an Engagement Profile. Learning past and present likes and dislikes of our residents with Alzheimer’s can help us with our engagement and how we approach and take care of that resident. We must determine where one is at in their disease, so we can meet them where they are. We have to remember they are still a person, and we need to treat them with as much respect and dignity as someone without Alzheimer’s.

Someone living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias can really benefit from life in our Memory Care Neighborhood. We are a homelike environment that provides people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias with the routine and care that they need. Our Neighborhood is filled with staff who are trained in working with residents with Alzheimer’s and other dementias to make sure we are providing the best care, engagement, and ensuring the best quality of life we can give to a resident.

At Vitalia Active Adult Community – Montrose we continue to increase our knowledge of Alzheimer’s through ongoing education, so we can better empower those living with the disease and help their families to better cope. Our Memory Care Neighborhoods maintain awareness of this disease, while offering engagement, safety, and comfort to our residents.
