Choosing a “Word of the Year” is more than just a fun tradition. Instead, it serves as a powerful tool for focus and growth at Vitalia Montrose. A single word acts as a guiding principle, shaping decisions, inspiring actions, and uniting teams around a shared purpose. By reflecting on the selected word, the community gains insight into how it influenced culture, strengthened connections, and supported meaningful experiences for residents and staff alike. Ultimately, this end-of-year review allows the community to celebrate successes, learn from challenges, and set the stage for continued progress in the year ahead.
To begin the year, our community selected Accountability as the 2025 Word of the Year and intentionally integrated it into daily operations and resident experiences. First, leadership clearly defined expectations for each department leader and established consistent follow-up practices. As a result, department heads met deadlines, upheld quality standards, and reinforced responsibility within their teams. Through regular coaching, check-ins, and open communication, team members gradually developed a stronger sense of ownership in their daily work and overall performance.

At the same time, accountability shaped how the team supported residents. For example, the community prioritized timely, transparent communication so team members could acknowledge and address needs promptly. In addition, department leaders increased their presence at resident-facing events, which helped build stronger relationships, gather feedback, and demonstrate follow-through. Meanwhile, the team enhanced the New Resident Orientation process to deliver consistent information, reliable support, and ongoing follow-up throughout each resident’s transition into the community.
As the year progressed, this focus on accountability strengthened leadership across the community. Consequently, department heads grew into more confident, effective leaders who communicated expectations with greater consistency. Likewise, team members felt more comfortable sharing concerns and ideas, which fostered a more collaborative and supportive culture. Over time, several service areas showed measurable improvement, and increased stability supported stronger employee retention.

Most importantly, the year brought a deeper understanding of the Executive Director role. In particular, this experience reinforced the importance of trusting department heads to make sound decisions. By empowering leaders to act independently, it becomes possible to focus more fully on guiding vision, offering support, and strengthening the community as a whole. Moving forward, this approach will continue shaping future goals by reinforcing shared responsibility and maintaining accountability as a foundation for success.
As we look back on the impact of our Word of the Year at Vitalia Montrose, it’s clear this simple concept can spark meaningful change. It has guided our priorities, strengthened our sense of community, and reminded us of the values that matter most. Let’s carry these lessons forward as we prepare for the year ahead, because one word can truly make a difference when we live it every day.
