As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Montrose, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place where people truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just helpful — it is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community starts with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed gathering, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they belong.
From my perspective, every interaction is a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also experience the emotional and social benefits that come with genuine human connection.
To me, community in a senior living setting means residents connecting on a deeper level. It includes forming bonds with staff, supporting one another, and sharing life’s celebrations and challenges. I see it daily — during joyful moments, times of loss, or simple check-ins in the hallway. I help build that sense of belonging through grief support, engaging events, meaningful conversations, and friendships rooted in trust and authenticity. Community grows from consistent actions of care between residents and staff.
Building strong relationships among residents is vital because it lifts an emotional weight many carry. When residents feel connected, they walk more confidently and smile more often. They get involved, spreading positivity throughout the community. Friendships remind them they’re not alone. They also show that their experiences — whether grief or health challenges — are understood. I see it when residents rally around someone new or support one another after a loss. These bonds fill our halls with chatter and laughter. Without them, the days would feel quiet and empty. It’s these connections that make our community feel like home.
I help residents engage with one another in several ways. Our ambassadors visit new residents to make them feel welcome. We host social gatherings where people can mingle and connect. I encourage residents to invite someone new to join them for a program or to sit with a different group at meals. Often, people are simply waiting for someone to notice them. Once they feel included, their confidence shines.

Even in everyday moments, I look for ways to bring people together. I include nearby residents in conversations or ask for their opinions. I also reassure hesitant residents that it’s okay to observe at first. They can enjoy the company without pressure until they feel ready.
Our connection to the surrounding town is just as important. We host story corners, brunches, trick-or-treating, and our annual tree lighting. Local vendors join us for Wellness Wednesdays and craft fairs. Churches and synagogues offer services in our building. Outings into the community help residents share pride in where they live and stay rooted in the town around them.
One of my favorite events is our Trick-or-Treat and Halloween celebration. It’s always full of energy and laughter. I also enjoy our Valentine’s Day party and our happy hours, especially those that highlight shared values and connection. These events bring people together and create meaningful memories.
When welcoming new residents, I focus on what matters most to them. I want them to feel seen — so I learn their name, understand their routines, and notice what makes them comfortable. Our Welcome Group Ambassadors greet them on day one. They offer “retours,” lunch buddies, and program partners. We also host monthly FAQ sessions to help new residents get oriented.
I pay attention to the little things, such as favorite TV shows or family traditions, and celebrate those with them. In the first few weeks, my goal is simple. I want new residents to meet others, enjoy meals together, and feel at ease. More importantly, I want to see them begin seeking connection and advocating for their needs. That’s when I know they feel empowered and truly at home.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Montrose, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these relationships can transform daily life. These efforts turn our building into a true home and create moments that residents and their families will treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, it’s the connections we nurture that make all the difference.
